The Sox were in on the Marlins firesale

Thankfully the Jays overbid. It would have been a terrible move for Boston.

  • Another view of Boston’s options with Jacoby Ellsbury

Another view of Boston’s options with Jacoby Ellsbury

Mike Axisa of Fangraphs breaks down the three options about Ellsbury, as I did a few weeks ago. I’ve argued for trading Ellsbury but have since become more open to the idea of keeping him for the year and letting him walk. That’s the one option Axisa isn’t fond of.

I understand why from a value standpoint, but if there’s no deal to be made — to use Axisa’s examples, if competitors view Ellsbury as worth less than, say, Shin-Soo Choo — I’d rather keep Ellsbury and let him go than get low-level prospects back. I’d rather have the draft pick compensation.
